ABOUT SECATEUR

Abundance needs

PRUNING, too.

The modern world has grown so loud.

Somewhere along the way, life drifted from the unhurried magic of afternoons spent barefoot in the garden, soft verdant blades tickling your toes. The smell of the damp earth after the rainstorm, the crackle of an evening bonfire, the crunch of autumn leaves, the wet thud of winter snowballs.

In its place, the noise of modern convenience crept in. Undetected at first, but now impossible to ignore, there’s a droning that drowns out the heartbeat that once nurtured us. A humming of synthetic quick-fixes, a cacophony of relentless clicks, likes and swipes. In the rush of endless doing, your best intentions are being smothered by overwhelm and obligation.

When your outdoor spaces and daily pacing demand more energy than they give you, it’s not a personal failing. It’s simply a sign that we need to cut something back.

To grow spaces full of life, we must first cut them back.

Secateur brings purposeful structure to your home, garden, and daily rhythms. Treating your physical landscape and domestic routines as a single, living ecosystem, we help you prune away the excess, strip back daily friction, and restore a natural cadence to your life. From enduring heirloom garden design to intuitive household systems, we cultivate unencumbered spaces built to age with quiet grace, purpose, and room to grow.

Gardens should be built to be lived in, not just maintained.

We believe a landscape should never be high-maintenance, performative or sterile. It should be a living sanctuary, crafted from honest, organic materials, and full of life and vigor. And in return, these bustling gardens share their vitality with us and those around us.

Our approach to garden design balances structural clarity with natural freedom. We pair intentional paths with well-placed tools, and purposeful, useful plantings - heirloom herbs, fruit-bearing shrubs, and resilient perennials - with generous spaces that invite you to be a part of the scenery: to sit by an evening fire, gather around a table outdoors, or simply watch the seasons shift.

Consider stewardship over control.

True design gives you permission to step back and observe. By planting with the ecological truth of your land rather than fighting against it, we create spaces that can go a little wild at the edges without collapsing into chaos.

We embrace design as an evolving practice, adjusting as you discover which plants thrive in which corners, where tools naturally want to live to fit your daily comings and goings, and which chores bring you joy versus which ones drain your energy. As your life, capacity, and climate shift, we allow for thoughtful pivots and changes.

Let Secateur take the guesswork out of layout, material selection, and plant care, building a resilient foundation that honors your senses and serves as a quiet partner to help you rediscover the natural cadence of a life well-lived.

ABOUT the FOUNDER

Kat is a gardener, systems designer, and steward of cultivated spaces.

Based in Indianapolis, she tends a bustling urban property - raising chickens and rabbits alongside native plantings, a cottage garden and a greenhouse - and knows firsthand how quickly a passion for living things can turn into overgrown obligation.

With over 15 years in operations and structural workflow design, Kat has mastered the quiet art of building systems that bring order to complex environments. Now, she brings that discipline home. Her approach is rooted in keen observation: paying attention to how you actually live, stripping back friction, and establishing resilient structures that fit the honest cadence of a life well-lived.

Secateur grew from Kat’s conviction that our homes and gardens should nourish us, not cause endless exhaustion. Blending a reverence for historic architecture and naturalistic planting with the editing eye of operational design, she helps you cultivate a life and space shaped by beauty, purpose, and room to grow. ‍
